Retro Builder is a program I created because I wanted something that could bring back the feeling of the 90s internet. I wanted a tool that could create functional websites while giving users a healthy dose of nostalgia.
I originally started this project during one of the most difficult periods of my life, when I was facing eviction. To be blunt, the project was terrible back then. It may have been a prototype, but it was incredibly limited. It ran entirely in a browser, had very few features, and honestly would have been considered shovelware if it had been released in that state during the 90s. The reality, though, was that I couldn't afford to pay my rent. Out of desperation, I released it anyway, and it sold next to nothing.
At the time, Retro Builder functioned more like a poorly made version of Microsoft Word than a proper website builder. It lacked the tools, flexibility, and vision needed to stand out.
After the eviction, I moved in with my brother, who was dealing with his own struggles. I could tell almost immediately that he didn't really want me there. It wasn't because of the eviction itself, but because my presence made an already cramped apartment even more crowded. The situation created a lot of tension between us, and it was a difficult environment to live in.
Looking back, both my life and the project were in rough shape. Neither was where I wanted it to be. But over time, Retro Builder evolved, and so did I. What started as a desperate attempt to create something and make money and pay my rent during a difficult chapter of my life gradually became the foundation for a much bigger vision.
